THERAPY RECOMMENDATION

  • Positive effects:
  • Spermidine is an endogenous polyamine and a natural component of living organisms.
  • It is involved in fundamental cellular processes such as cell growth, cell differentiation, and repair mechanisms.
  • Spermidine plays a role in autophagy – an endogenous process in which aged or no longer required cellular components are broken down and renewed.
  • Furthermore, the product information describes associations with mitochondrial function and ATP production, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory processes.
  • Possible effects on neuronal functions, vascular elasticity, and heart function are also listed.

Therapeutic recommendations: There is evidence that spermidine can be used supportively as part of individually tailored therapeutic concepts:

  • to support the immune system
  • as part of medically supervised therapeutic concepts for viral infections, including in connection with SARS-CoV-2, with a focus on supporting cellular autophagy processes
  • accompanying persistent symptoms after viral infections, for example, states of exhaustion in the context of Long Covid, if necessary in combination with other therapeutic measures such as S-adenosylmethionine, vitamin C, or magnesium
  • in the context of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases
  • to support concentration and mental performance
  • in metabolic diseases and as part of weight management concepts
  • accompanying chronic kidney diseases
  • in cardiovascular diseases and hypertension
  • in type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • in inflammatory processes
  • in age-related hair loss
  • accompanying oncological therapeutic concepts; the clinical relevance of this application is expressly described in the underlying product information as not yet conclusively established.

Contraindications:

  • Do not use in children under 6 years of age.
  • In cases of impaired kidney, liver, or heart function, as well as in cases of albumin deficiency, the individual dosage should be adjusted by a physician.
  • In patients taking beta-blockers, a particularly careful benefit-risk assessment is required.
  • In patients with a known tendency toward allergies, asthma, or other diseases associated with histamine release, an individual medical examination should be carried out before use.

Note for physicians and therapists: In individual prescriptions, the treating physician or therapist determines the indication. Dosage and frequency of use are to be determined individually. Before starting treatment, the respective application must be checked and assessed on a patient-specific basis.

References

The literature references have been researched by us with the utmost care. Nevertheless, we assume no liability for the completeness and timeliness of the study information. Many of the treatment options mentioned in the product information are based on findings obtained from animal or human cell cultures, animal studies, observational studies, and to a lesser extent, randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
The evidence base for complementary medicines is continuously evolving, which can partly lead to different results. We therefore recommend that therapists always carefully review the current evidence before using such preparations.
