Side effects: Vitamin C can lead to falsely elevated blood sugar readings. Very rarely, high doses of ascorbic acid can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. In individual cases, short-term circulatory disorders may occur. The formation of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidney can impair kidney function. People with already impaired kidney function are more sensitive to this.

THERAPY RECOMMENDATION

Positive effects:

  • Vitamin C 7.5 g infusion is generally antioxidant; in patients with low body weight, 7.5 g may also have a prooxidant effect.
  • Vitamin C is an essential micronutrient for humans.
  • Vitamin C is sensitive to oxidation and can be destroyed by improper heat, light, or alkaline media.
  • Antioxidant: Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant; it recycles vitamin E and regenerates glutathione. Oxidative protection of lipids, cell membranes, proteins, and nucleic acids by reducing free radicals. Latent vitamin C deficiency is common and inapparent; vitamin C is a co-factor in many reactions. This determines its diverse applications.
  • During acute infections, burns, surgery, inflammation of any kind, silent inflammation, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and emotional stress such as grief and pain, the body's consumption of vitamin C increases sharply.

Therapeutic recommendations: There is evidence that the properties of the substances contained in the product may have a positive effect on health disorders related to the following indications:

  • subclinical scurvy
  • methemoglobinemia
  • antioxidant therapy
  • anti-inflammatory therapy
  • Immune system: Strengthening of cellular and humoral defenses in acute or chronic infections
  • Long Covid: Convalescence after severe infections
  • Exhaustion: supportive in all illnesses accompanied by exhaustion and fatigue, including CFS, FMS
  • for brain fog in combination with red. glutathione (see there)
  • Oncology: convalescence after chemotherapy
  • in pain therapy, alternating with alkaline infusions
  • Cardiovascular diseases: increased NO bioavailability (antithrombotic, blood pressure lowering)
  • in cases of elevated blood lipid levels, cholesterol is lowered, HDL is increased
  • in cases of heart rhythm disorders and heart pain
  • Arteriosclerosis: focal local scurvy can occur, among other places, in the coronary artery wall and become chronic; the cause is oral pathogens from periodontitis, gingivitis, or bacteria from the root canal that enter the bloodstream, cause inflammation, and locally lead to vitamin C deficiency, subsequently leading to arteriosclerosis, which can trigger a heart attack in the coronary arteries
  • Collagen synthesis: vitamin C is a co-factor for connective tissue formation
  • Osteoarthritis therapy: supports the maturation and stability of cartilage
  • Wound healing: promoted in injuries, surgery, and burns
  • Dental medicine: periodontitis and gingivitis are reduced
  • Osteoporosis: bone fractures may have a local vitamin C deficiency as a cause
  • Iron metabolism: improved iron utilization
  • in bronchial asthma and allergy, histamine metabolism: promotion of histamine degradation, mast cell stabilization
  • Adrenal gland: support of the biosynthesis of glucocorticoids
  • Neuropeptide hormones: the formation of adrenaline and noradrenaline requires vitamin C
  • Diabetes mellitus: glucose and fat metabolism are positively influenced
  • in glaucoma: vitamin C can lower intraocular pressure and reduce the risk of cataracts
  • Detoxification: toxins from food and the environment can be degraded and mobilized under vitamin C; for this reason, the detoxification organs should be supported

Contraindications: Do not use in children under 6 years of age. In cases of impaired kidney, liver, or heart function, and in cases of albumin deficiency, an adjustment of the individual dose is recommended. Patients taking beta-blockers have an increased risk of a decompensated cardiovascular reaction, as beta-blockers inhibit the effect of adrenaline (emergency medical treatment). Patients with a tendency toward allergic reactions and/or with diseases based on histamine release (e.g., asthma) should be questioned about known allergens in accordance with the principles of therapeutic duty of care.

Contraindications: Thalassemia, hemochromatosis. High-dose vitamin C infusion can promote the release of iron from the body's stores. G6PDH deficiency can lead to acute hemolytic anemia, which is caused by the destruction of red blood cells. Laboratory parameters must be checked. There should be no history of asthma.

CAVE: Bronchoconstriction due to vitamin C is possible. In cases of impaired kidney function, high-dose vitamin C may have a nephrotoxic effect.

Note for doctors and therapists: In principle, the doctor/therapist determines the indication for individual prescriptions. The proposal is merely a recommendation for a therapy option, whereby the dosage and frequency of application are solely at the discretion of the doctor/therapist. The treating therapist is responsible for the treatment and must individually check and assess the respective application for each patient before the start of treatment.
